Folks invariably start to describe a little about how they connect without giving full context.

The problem, if you can call it that, is that there are multiple ways to connect a SynScan mount to the PC. PC Direct mode is ONLY ever used if you are connecting directly from the PC to the mount using a ShoeString Astronomy direct connection cable AND running EQMOD / EQASCOM instead of the SynScan ASCOM driver. Folks often give such advice here on CloudyNights but it is wrong. First, if you are using the SynScan ASCOM Driver, then DO NOT put the hand control into PC direct mode. I have seen some more incorrect advice in this thread. (Note that the HC MUST NOT be in PC Direct Mode here.) PC -> USB-to-RS232 -> FirmwareUpdateCable -> HC -> Mount You will be doing the following in order to use the SynScan ASCOM Driver. Use that and the USB-to-RS232 adapter cable you have and you should be able to quickly connect without problems.

The cable you need is the Firmware Update cable that came with your mount. That is likely one source of the problem. You should not be using any gender changer. Thank you guys so much! You guys have been very helpful so far. I'll get back to you guys as soon as I get the cable or find a different solution. I think I will have to buy the Shoestring Astronomy cable to replace the cable I currently have.

It still recognizes the serial cable as COM 2. I've also made sure that I'm not experiencing "port jumping" in my Device manager. I do wonder if this problem would not happen if you bought an expensive FTDI adapter cable from Mouser or someplace reputable. My Mach1 has never once jumped ports on me. On Windows, if you go to the Device Manager you can see which COM ports are actually active, and which one is assigned to the USB-Serial driver.Īstro-Physics mounts (and probably all other premium mounts) have a real true actual FTDI chip, using supported drivers. (When you buy them on Amazon, it is nearly impossible to tell if it has a real chip or a knockoff.) I have always suspected this was due to my cheap knockoff FTDI to RJ45 adapter. I don't have an Orion mount, nor do I use EQMOD, but on my Celestron mount I always had problems with "port jumping", each time I connect the mount to the computer or power cycle the mount, the port would jump, causing me to have to go hunting for it. I'm beyond frustrated with this and I have no idea what to do. I've also tried the "ForceCOMPorts" in the ASCOM Profile Explorer but still no luck. I know that the COM port exists because I can see it appear/disappear everytime I disconnect it in Device Manager. In StellariumScope, when I try adding a telescope through the ASCOM Telescope Chooser, the COM ports are not detected (No options in the drop-down selection). Stellarium says the mount is "connected," but no reticle appears and the telescope won't slew, even though I'm connected to the right COM port in the drop-down selection.

I tried both through Stellarium alone, because I've read that it has its own drivers to control mounts and I've tried through StellariumScope. I have tried connecting my mount to each program but I can't seem to get COM ports to work. I downloaded the ASCOM Platform 6.4 and the SkyWatcher SynScan Mount Controller driver.

So I've just bought a few cables to finally connect my Sirius EQ-G mount to my computer through Stellarium.
